Total Commander is anOrthodox File Manager (OFM) software for Windows, Windows CE, Windows Mobile,and Android. Some features include a built-in FTP client, file compare, archivefile navigation, and a versatile multi-rename tool with regular expressionsupport.
This application iswritten by Christian Ghisler in Delphi 2 (32-bit version) and Delphi 1 (16-bitversion). The program is extensible by programmers via an open plugin-API andit has the ability to bind external programs for viewing or editing files. Manyplugins are freely available for e.g. different packer formats or file viewerfor special file formats. As well, a large variety of internal functions(commands) are available and ready to assign to icons, although some studymight be needed to discover them.
Additionally, TotalCommander can be made portable via a special installer for USB and U3 disks.
The Windows version isshareware : users can download it for free and use indefinitely, but shouldregister or delete it within 30 days. The unregistered version reminds the userto register every time it starts, but it
retains full functionality even afterthe 30-day trial period.

One notable feature ofTotal Commander is that in addition to allowing access to Windows partitions,there is a plugin that allows users to access both EXT2/EXT3 and Reiserpartitions on the same machine. Hence, for dual-boot machines with Windows andLinux, Total Commander allows access to files stored on the Linux partitionwhile running Windows.
The download is about3MB; available in both 16- and 32-bit versions, for the various versions ofWindows, and is, for the most part, compatible with Linux using Wine. There arealso native Linux alternatives to TotalCommander.
Currently, TotalCommander supports SFTP only via a plug-in.
As of version 8.00,which is currently under development, there are separate 32-bit and 64-bitversions of the program available.
