Tại Sao Bạn Nên Học Anh Ngữ

Học một ngôn ngữ khác là mở ra một chân trời mới và rất nhiều cơ hội mới cho bạn. Nếu bạn đang chán nản với việc học thêm một tiếng ngoại ngữ nào đó thì đây là 10 lý do giúp bạn có thêm động lực để hoàn thành tốt khóa học của mình.

1. Tăng sự hiểu biết toàn cầu

Federico Fellini, đạo diễn phim người Ý đã nói: "Mỗi một ngôn ngữ khác nhau đưa lại cho chúng ta một tầm nhìn khác nhau về cuộc sống". Học một ngôn ngữ mới đưa lại cho người học khả năng tiếp cận và bước vào một nền văn hóa khác. Tại sao điều này này lại quan trọng? Trong một thế giới mà các quốc gia và các dân tộc đang ngày càng phụ thuộc vào nhau để cung cấp hàng hóa và dịch vụ, giải quyết tranh chấp chính trị, và đảm bảo an ninh quốc tế như ngày nay thì hiểu biết các nền văn hóa khác là một việc hết sức quan trọng. Thiếu sự nhạy cảm văn hóa có thể dẫn đến mất lòng tin và sự hiểu lầm, giảm khả năng hợp tác, đàm phán và thỏa hiệp.

Khi cuộc sống toàn cầu hóa với sự hỗ trợ của di động và truyền thông đang đưa thế giới gần nhau hơn bao giờ hết thì các công dân toàn cầu, đặc biệt là giới trẻ càng có nhiều cơ hội để tiếp xúc với ngôn ngữ mới. 52,7% dân số châu Âu thông thạo cả tiếng mẹ đẻ và ít nhất một ngôn ngữ khác. Là một người trẻ tuổi, nếu bạn không có thêm một ngoại ngữ trong tay, bạn sẽ trở thành người tụt hậu so với thời đại.

2. Nâng cao khả năng làm việc

Dù cho bạn đang làm việc ở bất cứ ngành nghề nào, nếu có thêm vốn ngoại ngữ thì cơ hội thăng tiến, mở rộng quan hệ, hiệu quả công việc của bạn sẽ cao hơn so với những người chỉ biết 1 thứ tiếng. Hiện nay, nhiều cơ quan chính phủ, ngành công nghiệp du lịch, kỹ thuật, truyền thông, các lĩnh vực giáo dục, luật pháp quốc tế, kinh tế, chính sách công, xuất bản, quảng cáo, giải trí, nghiên cứu khoa học và một mảng rộng các ngành dịch vụ… đều có nhu cầu cho tuyển dụng những người có kỹ năng sử dụng ngôn ngữ nước ngoài. Và những người có lợi thế về ngoại ngữ bao giờ cũng có cơ hội được hưởng lương cao hơn đồng nghiệp.

3. Tăng khả năng sử dụng ngôn ngữ bản xứ

Nhiều nghiên cứu cho thấy kiến thức về các ngôn ngữ khác làm tăng sự hiểu biết của sinh viên về ngôn ngữ nói chung và cho phép họ sử dụng ngôn ngữ mẹ đẻ hiệu quả hơn. Những người học ngôn ngữ nước ngoài có kỹ năng xử lý trong nói và viết cao hơn, huy động từ vựng nhanh hơn và có khả năng đọc hiểu, phân tích hình ảnh tốt hơn so với người chỉ biết một thứ tiếng.

4. Nâng cao kỹ năng nhận thức và đời sống

Richard Riley, Bộ trưởng Giáo dục thời Tổng thống Bill Clinton đương nhiệm đã khẳng định: “Chúng tôi chắc chắn rằng học một ngôn ngữ nước ngoài sẽ có hiệu ứng sóng, giúp nâng cao hiệu suất học tập của học sinh trong các môn học khác”. Những trẻ em được học thêm một ngoại ngữ ở cấp tiểu học sẽ có điểm cao trong các kì thi trắc nghiệm về đọc, sử dụng ngôn ngữ và toán. Không những ngoại ngữ giúp phát triển trí não, nâng cao nhận thức mà còn phát huy sự sáng tạo, kỹ năng tư duy bậc cao như giải quyết vấn đề, tổng hợp khái niệm, lý luận... Từ đó, người học sẽ có thêm kỹ năng sống, cách đối phó và thích ứng với văn hóa mới, tình huống mới và dễ giao tiếp, gặp gỡ với mọi người.

5. Tăng cơ hội vào đại học hoặc sau đại học

Ngày nay, hầu hết các trường đại học, cao đẳng đều yêu cầu chứng chỉ ngoại ngữ ở một trình độ nhất định. Nhiều chuyên ngành trong nghệ thuật và nhân văn, khoa học tự nhiên và khoa học xã hội cũng yêu cầu bạn phải học hoặc nghiên cứu về một hoặc nhiều ngôn ngữ để đảm bảo sự sáng tạo và thành công trong tương lai. Có kiến thức về ngoại ngữ tức là bạn có thêm khả năng tự tìm kiếm tài liệu, đào sâu kiến thức về các ngành học đòi hỏi sự hiểu biết sâu rộng.

6. Để có khả năng đánh giá về văn học quốc tế, âm nhạc và phim

Các công trình vĩ đại của thế giới văn học, nghệ thuật được viết bằng rất nhiều ngôn ngữ khác nhau. Một bản dịch không bao giờ truyền tải hết được ý nghĩa, phong cách, sự độc đáo trong tâm hồn của tác giả. Chỉ có một cách duy nhất để có thể cảm nhận được toàn bộ tác phẩm đó là tự mình đọc chúng bằng chính ngôn ngữ mà tác giả thể hiện.

Không chỉ văn học mà các thể loại sân khấu, âm nhạc, phim cũng vậy. Nếu ta tìm hiểu chúng ở dạng nguyên bản thì giá trị của chúng sẽ được giữ trọn vẹn.

7. Chuyến du lịch sẽ khả thi và thú vị hơn

Mặc dù bạn có thể đi du lịch mà không cần biết chút gì về ngoại ngữ nhưng như thế thì đã giảm đi hơn nửa sự thú vị. Khi bạn thiếu khả năng giao tiếp bằng ngôn ngữ bản địa, bạn có thể sẽ không được tham gia đầy đủ các chương trình về văn hoá, phong tục tập quán ở nơi đó. Rào cản ngôn ngữ sẽ hạn chế khả năng tìm hiểu, tiếp cận và học hỏi của bạn, đôi lúc có thể gặp nguy hiểm. Khi bạn biết về ngôn ngữ, bạn có thể thoải mái trong mọi tình huống, đơn giản như gọi món ăn trong nhà hàng, tìm chỗ ở, thương lượng giá rẻ, gặp gỡ nói chuyện với người bản địa để hỏi đường…

8. Chìa khóa mở rộng con đường học tập, nghiên cứu

Ngoại ngữ là một yếu tố không thể thiếu nếu bạn có ý định tìm học bổng để đi du học.  Hầu hết các chương trình học bổng đều đòi hỏi bạn có khả năng giao tiếp và học tập thông qua một ngôn ngữ tiêu chuẩn (thường là tiếng Anh).

9. Nâng cao hiểu biết của mình và văn hóa của đất nước mình

Henri Delacroix, họa sĩ và nhà làm phim Pháp đã nói: "Toàn bộ kinh nghiệm của cá nhân được hình thành dựa trên kế hoạch của ngôn ngữ".

Biết một ngôn ngữ là cơ hội cho bạn nhìn thấy bản thân và văn hóa nước nhà từ góc nhìn bên ngoài. Khi liên hệ với ngôn ngữ khác, nghĩa là bạn đã liên hệ tới một văn hóa, truyền thống và phong tục khác. Điều này giúp bạn có một cái nhìn tổng thể, đầy đủ và khách quan hơn về con người, về cuộc sống.

10. Có nhiều bạn bè

Biết thêm một ngôn ngữ sẽ giúp bạn tăng số lượng bạn bè trên thế giới. Trong một môi trường mới  nếu có ngoại ngữ, bạn có thể giao tiếp, học hỏi, làm quen hay trao đổi, chia sẻ với những người bản xứ hay sinh viên quốc tế. Bạn có thể dễ dàng bày tỏ quan điểm hoặc sự quan tâm của mình về vấn đề gì đó và mọi người không gặp khó khăn để hiểu bạn đang nói gì, đang nghĩ gì.

Bất cứ ai đã nói với bạn rằng việc học một ngôn ngữ khác là không thực tế, không cần thiết hoặc đơn giản là một sự lãng phí thời gian quý báu thì đó là một sai lầm rất lớn. Hãy tận dụng cơ hội để nâng cao năng lực của bạn ngay lúc có thể - học một ngôn ngữ mới!

 Learning to speak English well may be the best thing you can do to improve your life.

That's right. Do you think it would be fun to have access to information that other people can't get? Talk and write letters to interesting people that others can't communicate with? Impress people around you whenever you opened your mouth? Make big jumps in your career, leaving others miles behind?

You can get all this if you speak English well. The better results can be achieved with a professional English tutor especially at private English classes.

1. Get access to knowledge

What are you interested in? Is it science? Music? Computers? Health? Business? Sports? Today's media — such as the Internet, television, and the press — give you almost unlimited access to knowledge about your favorite subjects. After all, we live in the information age, don't we?

There's only one problem. Most of this knowledge is in English.

Here are some examples of knowledge you can use if you know English:

Most pages on the Web. That's over a billion (1,000,000,000) pages of information! It's amazing that learning just one language gives you access to almost all knowledge on the Internet.

Books — on any subject, from all over the world. Read books by British or American authors, and books translated from other languages. Whatever you're interested in, you can read about it in English!

The press. Only English-language magazines and newspapers can be bought in every part of the world. You don't have to search for Time, Newsweek, or the International Herald Tribune!

Science. English is the key to the world of science. In 1997, 95% of the articles in the Science Citation Index were written in English. Only about 50% of them were from English-speaking countries like the USA or Britain. (source)

News reports. Watch international television networks, such as CNN International and NBC. They broadcast news much faster, and more professionally, than smaller, national networks. And you can watch them everywhere in the world.

The Best way to learn English

2. Communicate with people

We like to call English "the language of communication". Why? Because it seems all the people in the world have agreed to use English to talk to each other.

About 1,500,000,000 people in the world speak English. Another 1,000,000,000 are learning it. (source)
75% of the world's letters and postcards are written in English. (source)
Almost all international conferences and competitions are conducted in English. For example, the Olympics and the Miss World contest.
Diplomats and politicians from different countries use English to communicate with each other. English is the main language of organizations like the United Nations, NATO, and the European Free Trade Association.

If you can communicate in English, you can:

Contact people from all over the world. Talk about your ideas and opinions on Internet discussion groups. Send e-mail to interesting people. Learn about their life and culture.
Travel more easily. Communicate with people wherever you go — English is spoken in more than 100 countries (source). Ask directions, have a conversation, or... ask for help. Who knows, maybe English will save your life someday!  

3. Push your career forward

If you want a good job in business, technology, or science, get out of that armchair and start learning English now! (If you already have a good job, start learning before you lose it!)

Knowing English will let you:

Put "excellent knowledge of English" on your CV. Get your dream job, and earn more money.
Gain technical knowledge. English is the language of technology, especially high technology like computer science, genetics, and medicine. If you're going to read about technology, you'll probably have to do it in English.
Learn computer science. Read technical articles without difficulty. Or write your own articles!
Be a world-class businessman (or -woman). It's simple. International business is done in English. And all business today is international. So if you want to play, you have to know English — to contact other businesspeople, go to conferences, read international business newspapers and magazines, etc.
Become a better scientist. Contact scientists from other countries, go to international conferences, visit academic centers abroad. Learn about new scientific discoveries by reading papers, books, and magazines.
Use your computer more effectively. Most computer applications are in English, so you will understand them better — and become a better employee.
Learn new skills for your job. The section "Get access to knowledge" explains how English helps you learn.

4. Enjoy art like never before

English lets you feel the culture of the world like no other language. With a good knowledge of the English language, you can do wonderful things:

Watch American and British films in the original. Once you try it, you'll never go back to dubbed versions!
Read great books. Every famous book was written in English or it was translated into English. There is an amazing number of titles — from classic plays like Hamlet to modern thrillers like Jurassic Park.
Enjoy English-language music more. Believe us: music is much better if you can understand the words.

5. English is easy to learn

English is not only the most useful language in the world. It is also one of the easiest languages to learn and to use:

Simple alphabet — no special symbols such as é or ä. Type in sweet, part, film on your computer. Now try süß (German), (Polish), (Russian). Which is easier?
Easy plurals — simply add s to a word. One car, five cars; one telephone, two telephones... There are very few exceptions.
Words are easy to learn. In French, it's la fille and le chien. In German, it's das Mädchen and der Hund. In English, they're just a girl and a dog. And that's all you need to know.
Short words. Most of the basic words are short: run, work, big, go, man. Long words are often shortened: sitcom = situational comedy, fridge = refrigerator, OS = operating system. Speaking English saves you time. :-)
Words don't change. But in many languages, one word has many forms:
English: The man is blind.
German: Der Mann ist blind.

English: This is a blind man.
German: Das ist ein blinder Mann.

English: I see a blind man.
German: Ich sehe einen blinden Mann.

Call everybody "you". You can say "Do you speak English?" to your friend or to your teacher. In other languages, you have to use the right word for the right person. In English, everybody is equal. :-)
English is everywhere. You can easily access English-language television, music, websites, magazines, etc. You don't have to learn from boring textbooks. You can learn and use your English at the same time. Using your English is especially important because it increases your desire to learn.

6. Get satisfaction

English is not only useful — it gives you a lot of satisfaction:

Making progress feels great. We'll never forget the moment we discovered we could speak with Americans or watch TV in English.
You will enjoy learning English, if you remember that every hour you spend gets you closer to perfection.
Using English is fun, too, because every sentence you speak or write reminds you of your success.

English makes you a more powerful, happier person. It is not difficult to imagine some situations where knowing English gives you a great feeling.

7. Vocabulary and Movement

So many students waste time trying to memorize English vocabulary.  They study long lists of vocabulary.  They repeat the lists many times, trying to memorize the English words and their translated meanings.
Research shows that 80% of vocabulary learned in this way is forgotten in less than a year.  That’s a lot of wasted time and effort.
There’s another problem with this vocabulary learning method– it’s boring and therefore it kills long term motivation.  Students must be very careful– killing your motivation is the worst thing you can do.  Learning English is a marathon, it’s a long run.   It requires high levels of motivation that are sustained for many years.
Using boring vocabulary learning methods, therefore, is doubly bad:  it is inefficient and it weakens motivation.
There is a better way– as participants in my recent Breakthrough Seminar in Bangkok learned.  It is possible to learn new vocabulary in a way that is far more powerful AND is a lot of fun.  When you learn in this way, you will remember 80% one year later!  That’s powerful.
The key to deep, powerful, long term vocabulary learning is movement.  When we combine strong physical movements with understandable new vocabulary, we create deep connections in our brains and bodies.  These connections are long term.  They last!
In the seminar, I taught a number of new words using strong actions.  The students shouted the new words with me, while simultaneously using the strong actions I showed them.  By the end of the lesson, they knew those words well.
But that’s not all.  Since Effortless English is a deep learning system, I repeated those new words again– this time in a Mini-Story.  Each time I used one of the new words in the story, I used the same physical movement we had been practicing.   Through the Mini-Story, the students got even more repetition of the vocabulary, with emotion and strong movements.
Finally, I gave the students homework:  download the audio of the same Mini-Story lesson, and listen to that audio every day for one week.
If the students do this, they will learn these new vocabulary words very deeply, and will remember them forever.   That is the power of the Effortless English system, and that is the power of using physical movement while learning!
